Wheel-throwing for beginners with Cath Smith
Whether you’re brand-new to the wheel or returning to clay after years away, my small, calm, in-person classes give you space to learn at your pace. We work together right at the wheel — hands on, sleeves rolled up, and fully present — so you get real guidance as you build your skills.
You’ll learn proper technique, gain confidence, and discover the quiet satisfaction of making something with your hands — one centered lump of clay at a time.
Because classes are deliberately small, you’ll receive personal attention, plenty of practice time, and absolutely no pressure. Just honest teaching, gentle humor, and the joy of creating something that feels entirely your own.

Cath is just the best! We had a great time together. She is down to earth and knowledgeable. I’ve learned so much in the 6 weeks with her. I’m well prepared to continue practicing my craft and hope I get the opportunity to see her again. Stella’s is lucky to have her.
— Adult beginner
Cath is very knowledgeable and encouraging with new artists. My daughter not only enjoyed the creating aspect, but spending time with an instructor who is friendly, attentive, and skilled. Thank you for igniting her love of wheel throwing!

Meet Your Instructor
Cath Smith is a local ceramic artist who believes pottery should feel grounding, joyful, and a little bit magical. She teaches with warmth, patience, and plenty of encouragement — and she’s known for celebrating the “beautifully imperfect” first attempts that every potter makes. Her goal is simple: help you relax, learn the foundations well, and enjoy the process of making something with your hands. She can be found online at @cathsmithceramics and @theteaonpottery
