Trimming

noun / verb (pottery)

Trimming is the process of refining a pot once it has stiffened to a leather-hard state. Excess clay is carefully removed using specialist tools — usually from the base — to improve shape, balance, proportion, and finish.

It’s the point in the making where you reveal the final form, and the last stage in the making process where clay can still be reclaimed and reused.
