Bisque Firing

noun (pottery)

Bisque firing is the first kiln firing of a clay object. The firing drives off chemically bound water and permanently alters the clay’s structure from clay to ceramic, while leaving it porous enough to accept glaze.

After bisque firing, the piece is no longer reclaimable.
